The biggest selling point of rubber tracks is their surface-friendliness. They do not damage asphalt, concrete, or paving stones, making them ideal for urban construction, landscaping, and indoor demolition projects. Additionally, rubber tracks significantly reduce vibration and noise during operation—crucial factors when working near residential areas or hospitals.

In terms of maintenance, rubber tracks may offer a lower total cost of ownership. While the initial replacement cost is high, they eliminate the need for routine maintenance tasks like chain lubrication and tension adjustments. However, their downsides are also significant: in harsh terrain littered with rocks, rubble, or scrap metal, rubber tracks are highly susceptible to cuts and excessive wear, which drastically shortens their lifespan.

Steel Tracks: The Champions of Durability and Extreme Terrain

Steel tracks are built for demanding conditions. Made from high-strength alloy steel, they easily handle rocky ground, tree roots, rubble, and steep slopes. In quarries, large-scale demolition projects, or forestry operations, the durability of steel tracks is unmatched; they effectively resist punctures and cuts while providing reliable traction under extreme conditions.

However, this ruggedness comes at a price. Steel tracks can severely damage soft surfaces during transport or operation, often requiring the use of protective mats or pads. They produce more noise and a rougher ride on hard surfaces, and their internal pins and bushings require regular lubrication and replacement, leading to higher long-term labor and parts costs.

How to Choose?

Choose rubber tracks if: You primarily work in urban areas, residential neighborhoods, or on finished surfaces and require low noise and vibration levels. Your projects mostly involve landscaping, utility installation, or light demolition.

Choose steel tracks if: You frequently work in remote mining areas, forests, or large construction sites where ground conditions are harsh and abrasive materials are present. Durability and traction are your primary considerations.

For most rental companies and occasional contractors, rubber tracks offer greater versatility and lower transport risks. However, for users engaged in full-time heavy earthmoving or rock work, steel tracks are the only economically viable option. Finally, a compromise solution is the use of rubber-padded tracks—steel tracks fitted with removable rubber pads—which offers the best of both worlds in most situations, though it is worth noting that the pads are subject to wear and require frequent replacement.
